What can we learn about men’s and women’s style from this year’s Hollywood awards shows? Specifically, the men’s and women’s fashion at the Oscars? Our correspondent Julie Chang Murphy has curated a list of the best designer fashion and celebrity styles and the best-dressed women and men from the 2022 Oscars red carpet.
The best-dressed women and men from the 2022 Oscars red carpet
It’s the day after the 94th Academy Awards…one that will go down in history, but, let’s not talk about that slap heard ‘round the world. Instead, we’re going to enjoy a moment of pure fashion spectacle as this year marked the return of the joys of the time-time-honored red carpet.
There were no masks in sight and almost no political statement-inspired choices. If there was any dominant trend it was the color red and affinity towards less fabric (think cut-outs, no shirt, and shorts!) Men were daring – bringing in color, patterns, and jewelry – giving us more to feature than the standard tuxedo.

In our highly subjective best-dressed Oscars list, one thing that can be said is that these stars’ sartorial choices looked like them. Not as if they were trying to be trendy and relevant or forced into a designer by a stylist. They didn’t look like they were paying homage to someone from a bygone era. They looked comfortable and confident — which we think is the most modern and luxurious way to be best-dressed. In no particular order, here are our top best-dressed women and men from the 2022 Oscars red carpet.
The best-dressed women and men from the 2022 Oscars red carpet
1. Demi Singleton
The King Richard actress is only 15 — an age where most of us were making questionable fashion choices. But she nailed it with this blooming, ethereal lavender gown from Miu Miu.
2. Zendaya
Zendaya is always at the top of the best-dressed list. She pushes the envelope and somehow always manages to look regal and sexy at the same time. Here she is in Valentino Haute Couture.
Crisp, Fresh. Elegant. Those are the thoughts that come to mind as we drool over this white button-up shirt with the collar popped and a silver sequined skirt that appeared to be lighter than air. The look drew comparisons to Sharon Stone’s famous 1998 Oscars red carpet outfit. Stone wore a simple white shirt from the Gap with a pearlescent satin skirt. And people couldn’t stop talking about it. Sort of how we can’t stop talking about this ensemble.
3. Timothée Chalamet
Leave it to a New York City kid to break all the rules. He not only went shirtless but went for a gender fluid look in Louis Vuitton’s embroidered lace jacket and high-waisted pants from the label’s Spring-Summer 2022 collection.

4. Renate Reinsve
We loved the vintage-y/Stevie Nicks/witchy/Victorian vibes of this Louis Vuitton gown that the “Worst Man in the World” actress chose for the Oscars.
5. Mila Kunis
It’s old-school Hollywood elegance for Mila Kunis in this Zuhair Murad Couture dress. The gorgeous muted pink satin strikes a sophisticated tone, elevating it from the girly and confectionary look it’s usually associated with.
6. Simu Liu
Red is a fortuitous color in Chinese culture and we loved how the Chinese-Canadian Marvel star represented in this Versace ensemble.
7. Queen Latifah
Literal sunshine, Queen Latifah stunned in this golden Pamella Roland gown. This is dopamine dressing at its finest.

8. Andrew Garfield
Could Andrew Garfield be in the running for a biopic on Yves Saint Laurent? In this burgundy velvet jacket, black shirt, bow tie, and tuxedo pants from the label, we think he certainly looks like the young version of the legendary designer.
9. Cynthia Erivo
It may be more subdued than other gowns but we think this sharply tailored Louis Vuitton ensemble is the epitome of contemporary chic.
10. Sofia Carson
The big, frothy gown is a red carpet staple but Sofia’s Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown in black is amongst our faves from that genre.
11. Jessica Chastain
The Best Actress of the night is also amongst the best-dressed in this Gucci gown that looks like a fairytale in shimmering rose gold and lilac.

12. Uma Thurman
Yes, Sharon Stone set the precedent back in 1998 in her white button-down shirt but we think Uma Thurman looks so minimalist cool and smart all buttoned up in Bottega Veneta.
13. Lupita Nyong’o
We don’t know how she does it, but Lupita Nyong’o manages to make this sparkling gold sequin Prada gown look like show-stopping fireworks but also, totally no big deal.
14. Ariana DeBose
The West Side Story actress made history by becoming the first openly queer woman of color to win an Oscar. It was only fitting that her Valentino ensemble was also a non-traditional mix of masculine and feminine details.
15. Olivia Colman
Modest dressing doesn’t always have to resemble a dowdy mother of the bride look. We love this glamorous Dior gown that makes The Lost Daughter actress look like a goddess.
16. Penélope Cruz
Another top pick of the night is the stunning ensemble that Penelope Cruz wore. Nominated for the Best Actress for her role in Parallel Mothers, Cruz was wearing an inky blue Chanel halter dress with a sweeping princess skirt. But it was her black and blue metallic tweed necklace that stole the show. The piece is a nod to Chanel’s iconic tweed, and it was both charming and authoritative tied into a bow and fastened to the halter dress’s neckline. Picture perfect.
17. Jada Pinkett-Smith
We will not be commenting on the actions of her husband, but we love the fashion choices that Jada Pinkett-Smith made. She walked the carpet in a regal emerald green gown with a stunning architectural silhouette that evoked a mighty flowing river.
Her dress is from the spring/summer 2022 couture collaboration between Jean Paul Gaultier and Glenn Martens of Diesel. The visual impact was exceptional, and even when the actress and producer was seated, she commanded attention. The color is gorgeous, and the dress an embodiment of beauty, elegance and old school glamour.
