The Top 10 Fashion Statements that Defined the Year 2020
We’re going in reverse order, ’cause it just seems like the right way to keep the suspense going, no?
10. Cruelty-Free Chic: Vegan Leather and Faux Fur
From vegan leather jackets to fabulous faux fur, the options for cruelty-free, sustainable fashion were better than ever this year. Like this retro-cool lace-trimmed faux fur jacket from Shrimps ($620).
9. Modern Pearls
Who says pearls are only for formal occasions? In 2020, there were fabulous and fun ways to style pearls that helped light up a dreary year.
Take, for example, this striking baroque pearl necklace from LA designer Sophie Buhai ($2,295). If you’re feeling particularly inventive, we love that you can turn it around, so that the silver clasp becomes the star of the show, either off to one side, or dead center.
8. Statement Sleeves
Essential for Zoom, whether for professional or personal engagements, the idea of “waist up” dressing became a core part of our wardrobes in 2020. And the interesting sleeve was an easy way to play the trend.
Our vote for Best of 2020? Bell sleeves were a leitmotif in Scandi-style star label Ganni, and this bell-sleeve leather mini dress ($695) is everything.

7. Cool Combat Boots
A tough world requires tough boots. We’ve been living in ours this year – ’cause you just never know what the day or the night might bring.
If you want to soften the idea of the classic black combat/biker boot, you cannot do better than this pair of cream leather combat boots from Legres ($643). Made in Italy, they feature a contrasting gunmetal zip and a chunky black tread sole.
6. “Vote” fashion
Who said fashion is frivolous? Not us. This year, designers utilized their talent and tools to craft gorgeous accessories and apparel to excite, engage and enlist everyone in voting season. Can it be a coincidence that more people voted in America than at any time in the last 100 years? We think not.
The winner in terms of social impact and style? The BYCHARI “Vote” necklace, ($295-345), which made its world debut when Former First Lady Michelle Obama wore one as she addressed the Democratic convention this fall.
5. Luxurious Loungewear
Just because we were confined to our homes didn’t mean that we had to live in sweatpants. Unless we wanted to. Enter luxury loungewear in cashmere and silk, with thoughtful designer elements and maximum comfort.
Allude’s beige cashmere lounge set ($931), with a scoop-neck sweater and drawstring track pants, provides luxurious ease for WFH, off-duty hours – and even travel days. Whenever they return to our lives.

4. The Nap Dress
There was a time that we had no idea what a “nap dress” was. Then there became a time when we couldn’t live without one.
Go straight to source, Hill House Home, and soon you’ll be floating through life in a 2020-definining classic. We love this new “Ellie” nap dress in navy glitter ($125) – its absolutely perfect for ringing in a new year.
3. The Leather Puffer
Puffers are not a new idea, of course. But what was fresh and new for 2020 was the elevation of the puffer to ultra-luxury status. The leather – or faux leather – puffer is the ultimate expression of cold-weather chic this year.
Frame’s leather wrap puffer jacket in dark bronze ($$1,698) is a winner that’s both totally on-trend and beautifully timeless.

2. The Converse Sneaker
When then-Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris hit the campaign trail in classis Converse All-Star sneakers, the power women of the world took notice. And soon, the idea of a tailored suit with old school sneakers was the Boss Lady look of the year.
Make the look your own with a classic in a solid color – or go a little wild and pop your look with a statement pair like these Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Low Tops for women ($24) in zebra print.
1. The Luxury Face Mask
If you had told us 12 months ago that we’d be building a face mask wardrobe this year, we would have said “Huh?” Sure, we knew what they were, because some people were wearing them pre-COVID-19. But never did we dream that the luxury designer fashion face mask would be the accessory of the year.
If you have to wear a face mask, you might as well don one with some style and personality, right? Jennifer Behr has just launched a new collection of chic face masks that we will be rocking in the new year. Like this Embroidered Butterfly Mask ($128), featuring intricate and detailed embroidery of a butterfly. A symbol of spiritual rebirth and hope. And a beautiful talisman to carry into the New Year.
