The necessary new fashion accessory is the face mask, and there are new ones coming to market all the time. Some particularly chic citizens have a growing collection of them, so that they can color-coordinate them by day, and add some sparkle for the night. True fashion devotees are building entire face mask wardrobes. Are you in on this? It is now the end of June 2020, and we are finding ourselves in need of a serious face mask upgrade.
Our relationship with this medical accessory has evolved in the past few weeks from government officials telling us not to use them, to trying to make no-sew versions out of old leggings, to buying a precious few from crafty neighbors who had sewing machines.
Until, that is, fashion designers and artists came to our rescue!

As we reported in April, scores of fashion brands volunteered their workshops and their teams to produce masks for vulnerable populations and medical first-responders in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Then, they started to design masks for the rest of us to protect ourselves and others on trips to the grocery store and for the occasional walktail. Still, I did not realize (or want to believe) that the face mask might be here to stay until the year two thousand and forever.
My humble black cotton mask was just fine. Until it started to get raggedy from overuse. Much like lip balms and hand sanitizer, in this new normal, it makes sense to have a few face masks in your collection: one in your tote bag, one for the car, at least one at your house – just in case.

Hard core fashionistas are going one step further, and color-coordinating their daily masks with their other sartorial choices. Careful consideration of the right bag, footwear and jewelry can be completely undone by a lame face mask. It’s covering 70% of your face! It’s worth investing some effort to get it right.
Luckily, we are firmly in the era of the stylish and attractive face mask. Because who wants to look like they’re in an operating room while picnicking at the beach?
