And for spectators who may not have the skills to pick up a board, rest assured, you can still look and dress like a pro. Of course it helps that Nike outfitted Teams USA, Japan, France, and Brazil (designed in collaboration with Dutch artist Piet Parra) and this is a pivotal year for the sport.

For years, the gymnasts really owned fashion at the Games with sparkly leotards, their bold makeup and we can basically give Shannon Miller credit for being the poster child for scrunchies.  It was a lot of pageantry. They appeared to have just rolled out of bed, grabbed a helmet and then somehow looked awesome. They are the epitome of effortless chic. Take Brazil’s Rayssa Leal the 13 year old beaded bracelets and cargo pants and, of course her timeless accessory —  a silver medal. She’s also been a viral sensation since age 7. 

And perhaps it is because most of the best people in this world in the sport are really young. After all, on the women’s side, Japan’s Momiji Nishiya, 13, made history when she took home the Gold medal with Leal, also 13, getting silver. Japanese skater Funa Nakayama, at the age of 16, took bronze. But you really are seeing some individual styles shine on these extraordinarily talented human beings.
