Frieze New York returns to the Shed at Hudson Yards

The tenth anniversary edition of the Frieze art fair in New York is underway at The Shed in Hudson Yards on the far west side of Manhattan. This is the second year that its been held there – the coronavirus pandemic wrecked the plans for the 2020 edition, which was to be held on Randall’s Island. When the fog of the pandemic cleared, the organizers opted for convenience over romance and relocated to a far more accessible location.

If you haven’t visited the Shed yet, you’re not alone. We went for the first time earlier this year to see Claudia Rankine’s commissioned work Help! It’s a colder and more austere space than we expected. But you can’t beat the sunsets over the Hudson, nor the easy access to the High Line.

We’re sharing some of our photos of the best moments in art and fashion we experienced during our visit to the Frieze New York Preview Day 2022 at the Shed at Hudson Yards NYC.

A visit to any event at the Shed begins with a ride on a truly vertiginous set of escalators.

Happily, in this case it made for excellent people-watching and fashion observation. Love the polka-dots two ways!

The experts have already opined about what they felt were the best works and gallery presentations at this year’s fair.

Here’s our totally unschooled take on the art that caught our eyes, from sculpture to works on paper to quilts.

sculptures

The works that spoke to us most had a human element. Some celebrated youth, fluidity and vitality.

Others silently spoke of decay, statis and loss.

Some radiate light and toss fanciful shadows in their wake.

It was a reminder of how engaging a contemporary sculpture can be.

paintings

The paintings were similarly diverse in mood and texture. The prize for best presentation in our book goes to this dramatic juxtaposition of painting and sculpture.

Happily, there was good representation of people of color in the figurative works. We know it’s a Thing right now, but we applaud it nevertheless.

We couldn’t stop looking at this work by William Kentridge.

There were a number of gorgeous tapestries and quilts.

One of the most fanciful and engaging works we spotted is hard to classify. It’s a bookcase filled with tomes hand-crafted by a Nigerian artist. This particular edition has works solely from African philosophers. Others feature the works of notable actors and politicians.

celebrating advocacy and incubators

The Art Newspaper reports that the new Director of the Frieze art fairs in New York and Los Angeles, Christine Messineo, is committed to celebrating the local arts organizations that serve as “accessible incubators for creativity – those that have a mission based in community building.”

In this case, that meant prime placement for work by artist Pedro Reyes that presents a stark case for nuclear disarmament.

And a creative installation from an all-female artist cooperative gallery highlighting exactly how many women in the U.S. will be affected if the leaked draft of the Supreme Court decision potentially overturning Roe v Wade proves to be even close to the wording of the final ruling.

Trigger Planting is a visual depiction of the devastating reach of so-called “trigger” laws will immediately ban abortion if Roe v Wade is overturned. Twenty-six states have such laws.

In this work, which measures 45 feet by 19 feet, each of those 26 states is marked by a small potted herbal abortifacient – a plant that has traditionally been used for contraception and abortion. In this case, the more green you see, the worse the situation is.

There are also on-site stations where art fair visitors can check the status of their voter registrations, or register to vote in the upcoming midterm elections.

Of course, at any gathering of people interested in contemporary art, the fashion is going to be a show into itself, and this Preview Day was no exception. If you’re wondering what to wear to a New York art fair, this was a pretty good master class.
