Maximalism is back, and minimalism is fading away
Mid-century modern – read 1950’s and ’60’s styles – and all-white minimalism are fading, to be replaced by strong vibrant colors and a 1970’s bohemian vibe. Patterned wallpaper is trending, too, adding to the idea that “layered, collected, and eclectic” are the new buzzwords in luxury home décor. As are “color, visual interest, and playfulness.”

mid-century is out, and the ’70’s are in
1st Dibs surveyed hundreds of designers from all over the world for their 2021 Trend Report. One of the key messages? “A 1970’s aesthetic is likely to be once again in vogue.” 29% of survey participants predict that the 1970’s was the decade most likely to feel on point for 2021.
Vogue notes that in 1972, the Museum of Modern Art in New York invited 12 Italian designers to participate in the exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape.” The creators of two of the must-have maximalist furniture items beloved by design mavens and Instagram made their American debuts at that show.

This groovy mirror was designed by Milanese “architect, industrial designer, philosopher and provocateur” Ettore Sottsass in 1970. Employing materials that were considered radical and shockingly new at the time was his hallmark. Like the wavy vacuum-formed acrylic sheet and colored neon light. Vintage design site 1st Dibs notes that “ultrafragola” translates to “the ultimate strawberry.” It’s a reference to the women and men who would view themselves within the sensuous curves of the mirror. 2. The Mario Bellini Camaleonda sofa
This bulbous sofa – which is modular and can be configured in numerous ways – is red-hot thanks to its multiple appearances on social media.
Bellini described his creation in an interview with Architectural Digest. “I crossed two words: camaleonte, or chameleon, an extraordinary animal capable of adapting to its environment, and onda, or wave,” he said.
3. Vintage objets d’art from the ’70’s
These brass crane birds are emblematic of the ’70’s vibe in home décor, according to Architectural Digest.
