While some past fads seem to be slow to exit (we’re looking at you, metallics!) other interesting trends are moving center stage. And now in particular, a movement that reflects the current yen for individuality and unique experience is a catalyst in the latest interiors collections.

Each of the following can add not only a current edge to your space. But also bring individuality to the fore, so that your home reflects your authentic personal story. So choose thoughtfully!

1. Murals

Fear not! These are not the sepia-toned scenes of the Acropolis from your grandmother’s house. The new trend in murals is a look rich in colors and tranquil in mood, like these trailing orchids from Osborne and Little.

Though traditional in style, these murals look great coupled with modern forms like this mid-century inspired settee.

Exotics are also a popular theme, evoking travel and other cultures. This modern mural from Elitis creates an instant focal point for a space. It could reflect a recent trip. Or perhaps your love of iconic Japanese fashion. 

2. Feathers

Whether as a design motif or the (seemingly) actual tufts from our flying friends, plumage figures prominently this Fall.

One of  the more exciting offerings is this wall covering collection from Schumacher with such real looking feathers that they could fool even Audubon.

And if you are more into jewel tones, you might prefer this deep dark blue version.

Or for more of an artistic take on the theme, this hand painted fabric from Zoffany adds a touch of whimsy.

Looking for less commitment? Toss this pillow on your bed or sofa for an immediate fine feather update.

3. Fringe

For a dramatic flourish, this trend brings an influence that can be both sophisticated and primitive. Perhaps it speaks to your inner Cher?

This lounge chair designed for McGuire by Laura Kinar can make any space instantly updated and unique.

For an option that is more more restrained but still on trend, this suede fringed ottoman can bring a little swing to the room.

4. Jewel-like Specialty Hardware

Not all jewelry comes in a velvet-lined gift box, but some of these options are certainly worthy of such presentation.

It’s only fitting that Addison Weeks designs both jewelry and hardware. They take their custom sensibilities approach even further, letting you choose the gemstone inlay as well as a back plate to further highlight your choice, like this stunner with Tiger’s Eye. Or this starburst design that so exquisitely frames an Amazonite center.

Adding one of these pieces to a mundane bedside table or a powder room vanity can bring it to a luxury level that is both personal and very on trend.

5. Tiny Tables

With craft cocktails all the rage, doesn’t yours deserve it’s own pedestal? Many top design sources are now offering tables barely large enough to accommodate an accompanying canapé.

Though diminutive in size, these tables are far from insignificant in impact. Take this stunner from the Bright Group. Alternatively, the Dante table from Julian Chichester provides a sculptural resting place for your evening cocktail. And since there are so many tables named for martinis, how about this graceful number from Ferrell Mittman named for Syrah?

6. Appliqué 

One of the loveliest trends to hit the interiors scene lately is modern design appliqué fabrics. Layered on linens, wools, velvets, and even sheers, this overlay technique has gained a new popularity this designer hopes has staying power.

This pillow from Holland & Sherry employs a modern take on the floral motif.

Another option from Holland & Sherry is this pillow, which stylizes the classic damask pattern.

In a lighter approach, this circle pattern appliqué on sheer fabric creates movement and a play of light. Very fresh and modern!

7. Wide Trims

Perhaps you’re a pattern-phobic modernist. Then take advantage of all the striking wide tape trims currently trending. Adding one of these to the leading edge of your neutral drapery panel will not only update the look, but can add just the right dose of color or pattern to a refined interior. Options shown below are offered through Fabricut.

No draperies? No problem – use one of these trims on the face of a pillow or as the boxed detail on a cushion for an individualized custom twist.

And for two trends in one,  this organza on linen appliquéd trim has double trend impact. 

8. Amorphic Designs

When so much of life seems highly controlled and structured, why not add a little free form diversion? An amorphous furnishing can provide visual relief to an ordered modern interior.

This Gigi Chair from Holly Hunt could be your retreat after a long day.

Although different from each other, these fixtures from John-Richard each provide a fluid source of lighting that would have a very updated impact on a room.

9. Tell a Story

Perhaps the greatest overall trend – and likely most important – is the idea of  experience embodied in interiors. This pursuit is considered as vital in today’s interiors as it is in our current approach to life – with each experience adding to the narrative of the individual.

At the recent What’s New What’s Next design event in New York City, this idea was stressed: a room or even an item could share a story.  With an abundance of immediate gratification offered from sources of every style and price point, people are longing for individualized elements within their homes.

Whether it’s that artifact from your global travels, the mid-century lamp from your favorite Aunt, or an antique coromandel screen found shopping with your designer, every room needs to feature a story thread. Not only does this reinforce your sense of self, but it can also be the perfect lead for a guest to get to know the true you.

So no matter which or how many of the current design directions you embrace,  in your home – as in your life – make sure your choices are reflective of you.
