4. barkley l. hendricks: portraits at the frick
For the first time in its 87-year history, Frick Collection will present a solo show dedicated to an artist of color – the late portraitist Barkley L. Hendricks. The show, titled Barkley L. Hendricks: Portraits, will feature 14 of his hallucinogenic figurative paintings hanging alongside works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and other European masters in the collection’s temporary home, Frick Madison – Sept 21 – Jan 7

The complex relationship between two French painters is the subject of a new exhibition at The Met. Manet/Degas brings together 160 paintings and works on paper by the titans. Among them the highlights Degas’s portrait of Manet and his wife, which rankled Manet so much that he sliced its canvas, and Manet’s succès de scandale “Olympia,” making its American début – Sept 24 – Jan 7

Based on Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel of the same name, Hulu’s The Other Black Girl is a thriller that centers on an editorial assistant at a publishing house where she’s the sole Black employee. Her loneliness subsides when another Black woman is hired to work there. But she soon starts receiving threatening messages to quit her job, which tests her newfound friendship and possibly uncover something even bigger at her office – Sept 13

Cassandro is a biographical drama about Saúl Armendáriz, who was one of Mexico’s first openly gay wrestlers. Gael García Bernal stars – Sept 15

The social-media-fuelled buying frenzy for GameStop stock, in January, 2021, which resulted in a Wall Street crisis, gets the movie treatment in Dumb Money starring Paul Dano, Shailene Woodley, America Ferrera and Seth Rogen – Sept 22

In Europe, the weather is expected to be balmy, and annual events in major cities encourage outdoor adventures. The Grande Classique is a popular annual run from Paris to Versailles; it starts at the steps of the Eiffel Tower and ends 10 miles later at the gates of Château de Versailles – the 44th edition is September 24.
In London, the annual Totally Thames month-long festival will encourage visits to the riverbank with musical performances, art installations, speakers, interactive exhibits and tours.
And in Switzerland, “Desalpes” (French-speaking areas) / “Alpabzug” (German-speaking areas) festivals are celebrated in September. After spending four months in the high alpine pastures, the farmers and their livestock parade down from the mountains to return to their winter farms. The cows sport floral headdresses and massive decorative cow bells. Afterward, the entire village parties – since the cows have come home.

In Asia, this month’s celebrations include the Mid Autumn Festival in China on September 29th. Traditionally observed to give thanks to the moon for the harvest, it’s often referred to as the Moon Cake Festival. Families share meals and send lanterns skyward toward the full moon.

In addition to all of that, Labor Day in America is the 4th. Rosh Hashanah begins Friday, September 15th at sunset and ends Sunday, September 17th at nightfall. The autumnal equinox, the first day of fall, is September 23rd. And Yom Kippur begins at sunset on September 24th and ends at nightfall on September 25th.
