what are the best new movies coming this fall season?
Where did the time go? Believe it or not, fall is almost here – and we are so excited. The crunchy leaves, the pumpkin spice. Halloween. And also? The movies.
We love a good summer blockbuster as much as the next person, but it’s no secret that September is when most of the year’s best movies finally start to hit theaters. You’ll almost always find your Oscar contenders debuting in fall and in winter. And that’s great news, because it means that starting September 1st, it’s all great movies from now until the end of the year.
Of course, there are many major titles that we’ve been looking forward to for a while now – among them, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Fablemans, and Hocus Pocus 2… but there are just as many others that we wouldn’t want you to miss.
So before “back to school” takes us into the unofficial start of autumn, here are ten fall movies we can’t wait to watch.
10 Best New Movies Coming out this Fall 2022
1. Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.
Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. was a huge hit at this year’s Sundance, and we can’t wait to finally see what all of the fuss is about! Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown star as Trinitie and Lee-Curtis Childs, the first lady and Pastor behind a disgraced megachurch. In Adamma Ebo’s comedic directorial debut, the Childs attempt to mount a comeback for them and their congregation. Between Girls Trip and Support the Girls, Hall is one of our favorite comedic actresses, and the trailer has us excited to see her in this role.
Out September 2nd.
2. Saloum
Saloum is a region in Senegal, known for the beauty of its landscape – and for its history and mystique. This is the setting for the new thriller from Jean Luc Herbulot. While on a mission to track down a drug dealer, a group of hired soldiers called Bangui’s Hyenas find themselves trapped in Saloum – to disturbing effect. Saloum premeried at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and we’re thrilled to see it reach a wider audience this fall. Yann Gael, Mentor Ba, and Roger Sallah star.
Out September 2nd.
3. Riotsville, U.S.A.
A “riotsville” refers to a fictional town built by the U.S. military, in response to the civil uprisings of the 1960’s. It was in these towns that the military and police learned how to fight against their own citizens – and in this new documentary from Sierra Pettengill, archival footage shows the story of what happened there. As we all take a critical look at this country’s systems of control, films like this one are crucial in educating viewers about those institutions’ dark histories.
Out September 16.
4. Don’t Worry Darling
After 2019’s Booksmart, audiences have been eagerly waiting for Olivia Wilde’s sophomore film. And now it is finally here, and it stars Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Gemma Chan, Chris Pine, Kiki Layne, and Wilde herself. The film is described as a thriller, taking place in a utopian company town in 1950’s California… where all is not as it seems.
Out September 23rd.
5. My Imaginary Country
In 2019, a revolution came to Chile. The citizens of Santiago took to the streets, demanding democratic and social justice from their government. And director Patricio Guzman captured the historic moment on film. Film is unique in its ability to preserve the most significant moments in our lives, and this new documentary – composed of archival footage and interviews – is sure to be one of the most vital of the year.
Out on September 23rd.
6. Catherine Called Birdy
This title may have sounded familiar to some of you. Perhaps you too were a fan of the 1994 Karen Cushman children’s novel. But even if you’re not – and even if you are not watching with children – this looks like one of the most charming movies of the season. The story takes place in 13th Century England, as an impoverished Lord (played by Andrew Scott) attempts to marry off his teenage daughter (played by Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey). Billie Piper, Joe Alwyn, and Dean-Charles Chapman also star. And since the trailer alone has a few laugh-out-loud moments, we have high hopes for the movie.
Out in theaters on September 23rd, and on Amazon Prime on October 7th.
7. Triangle of Sadness
The winner of this year’s Palme d’Or – the most prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival – may not be for everyone. So far, its claim to fame seems to be that it contains the longest and most graphic vomit scene in cinema history. But if you are curious about the highly-awarded film from Ruben Östlund – which is set on a cruise full of extremely wealthy patrons – you’ll have your chance to see it this fall.
Out October 7.
8. Decision to Leave
Of all the movies from this year’s Cannes, this may be the one that we are most excited to see. Directed by Park Chan-wook (Handmaiden, Oldboy), the movie follows a murder investigation. However, the detective’s job becomes more complicated when he finds himself falling for the victim’s wife – especially since she is also his prime suspect. We have heard nothing but rave reviews about this one, and we can’t wait for its international release.
Out October 14.
9. Call Jane
A team of all-stars – including Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, Chris Messina, and Wunmi Mosaku – lead the cast of Call Jane, the latest movie from Phyllis Nagy. When a woman discovers her pregnancy is dangerous to her health, she needs to have an abortion – and she has no legal way of acquiring one. And so she turns to the Jane Collective, an underground network of women who are able to help save her life. Though of course this movie was filmed before this June, its release can’t help feeling rather prescient.
Out October 28.
10. Nanny
We know little about Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny, except that it’s a horror film about an undocumented immigrant named Aisha. Aisha works as a nanny on the Upper East Side. And that it was one of the most talked-about movies from this year’s Sundance. Often with horror films, we like to go in knowing as little as possible, so we’re glad for this film’s relative mystery. Anna Diop, Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls, and Morgan Spector star.
Out November 23rd.
