what are the must-see new movies coming out this Fall 2023?
There are many highly anticipated new movies coming out this the fall. And we have never been more grateful for good movies than we are right now. We stand with SAG-AFTRA and the WGA as they continue to strike for a fair agreement with the studios. We feel lucky to be enjoying the hard work of actors and writers this season.
Here are ten of the movies we’re most excited to see over the next few months.
The 10 must-see buzzworthy new movies coming out this Fall 2023
1. All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt
Okay, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt may not be coming out until early 2024, but if you live in the New York area, you have the opportunity to see it this fall at New York Film festival. Single tickets go on sale in September, and we know you don’t want to wait. Written and directed by Raven Jackson, the film tells the story of Mack, a Black woman in Mississippi, as she experiences life, love, and heartbreak through many decades of her life. The film received rave reviews out of Sundance, and will be distributed early next year by A24. It stars Charleen McClure, Moses Ingram, Reginald Helms Jr, Sheila Atim, and Chris Chalk. NYFF 2023 festival schedule to be announced.
2. Dumb Money
Dumb Money could be well, dumb, but it also could be great. And with an ensemble cast like this one – Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Anthony Ramos, Shailene Woodley, Sebastian Stan, and the woman of summer 2023, America Ferrera – we’re willing to bet on the latter. This is a comedy-drama about the GameStop stock disaster of January, 2021, and while we’d usually be skeptical (how is this movie being released less than three years after those events occurred?), the cast, plus direction by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), have gotten us excited. You can decide for yourself on September 22nd, 2023.
3. Anatomy of a Fall
Every year, we wait with bated breath for a chance to view the movie that wins the biggest award – the Palme d’Or – at Cannes Film Festival. And this year, that film was the French thriller Anatomy of a Fall, written and directed by Justine Triet. The film is about a woman who is arrested for the murder of her husband – in a case where the crime’s only witness happens to be her blind son. We’ve already heard a lot about this movie, and we can’t wait to watch it on October 13th, 2023.
4. Killers of the Flower Moon
Though Barbie and Oppenheimer have been the most anticipated movies of 2023, Killers of the Flower Moon is a close runner-up. Martin Scorsese’s new three-and-a-half-hour epic is an adaptation of the book of the same name, and it looks at the murder of Osage tribe members that occurred in the early twentieth century, and at the FBI investigation that followed. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, as well as Robert de Niro, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Myers, and many others. We expect this movie to be a big hitter during awards season, and you’ll definitely want to see it in theaters when it’s released on October 20th, 2023.
5. The Holdovers
We haven’t gotten a new movie from Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) since the 2017 film Downsizing, and we’re really looking forward to this one. Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa star as the three people left behind at a New England boarding school during Christmas break – an unpopular teacher, a woman who has recently lost her son, and a difficult student. The movie looks prickly and human in all the best ways, and we hope it’ll get us ready for the holiday season on October 27th, 2023.
6. Dune: Part Two
It’s hard to believe it’s already time for Dune: Part Two. We liked the first installment of the science fiction franchise significantly more than we’d expected, and are looking forward to the addition of Florence Pugh and Austin Butler to the cast. We can’t wait to see what happens to Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya) in the second chapter of this space epic. Out November 3rd, 2023.
7. The Marvels
It’s been a while since we felt excited about a new Marvel movie, but The Marvels might be the one that has us back in theaters to see a movie about superheroes. Directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, Little Woods), The Marvels offers the next part of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau’s (Teyonah Parris) story, and has them joining them up with one of our favorite superheroes from the small screen – Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). If like us, you’ve lost track of the mythology of the MCU, don’t be deterred – the trailer for the movie is funny and charming all on its own, and with DaCosta at the helm, we think this one will be a hit. Out November 10th, 2023.
8. Next Goal Wins
Every time we see the name Taika Waititi, we know we’re in for a good time. His upcoming feature tells the tale of the famously terrible American Samoa national football team, and how coach Thomas Rongen worked to lead them to victory. The film is based on a documentary of the same name, and stars Michael Fassbender, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Kaimana, Elisabeth Moss, Beulah Koale, and Rachel House. Everything Waititi touches turns to comedic gold, and we can’t wait to see his latest. Out November 17th, 2023.
9. The Hunger Games: The Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes
It’s been too long since we saw a Hunger Games movie on the big screen. We are so excited to return to this franchise, with an adaptation of the series prequel directed by Francis Lawrence. The film follows the life of a young President Snow (Tom Blyth), and though fans of the original trilogy may think Snow an unlikely choice for a protagonist, those who’ve read the book will know – it works. The film is also full of our favorite all-stars: Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis. Out November 17th, 2023.
10. The Zone of Interest
The Zone of Interest is another movie that caught the public’s attention out of Cannes, and it’ll wrap up the fall moviegoing season on December 8th, 2023. Written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, the film is based on Martin Amis’s book of the same name. Set during World War II, the German-language film follows the commandant of Auschwitz as he tries to set up an ordinary life for himself and his family beside the concentration camp. It stars Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller, Medusa Knopf and Daniel Holzberg. The film won the second most prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival, the Grand Prix, so we know it’s worth our attention.
