Even though we know that the majority of this year’s problems are not going to evaporate when the calendar rolls to January 1^st, we still want to take this moment to tie up 2020 as well as we can.

Much like the Internet itself, memes have evolved into a major method of communication that can stand on their own. And if there’s one meme that really stood out this year – in a year that was overfull with them  – it was the “how it started/how it’s going” meme.

The perfect format to express ironic changes and astounding progress (or lack thereof), there seems to be an example for just about everything. If you’re looking for the perfect image to share on December 31st, why not post one of the best, or make your own?

2. Use the hashtag #HurryUp2021

Though we are still several weeks away from the new year, most of us can’t wait. It doesn’t matter if the world looks exactly the same as it does now on the first day of 2021 – the symbolism alone is enough to make us feel impatient.

And of course, the Internet has already come up with a slew of handy hashtags to help you mark your anticipation. Our personal favorite is #HurryUp2021, which sums up the way we are all feeling right about now.

3. Share a picture of yourself in this timely T-Shirt

Last year, many of us posted pictures of us wearing our best going-out attire, ready to start 2020 in style. Well, not this year. Since parties are canceled and most of us plan to spend the night at home, there’s no need to get fancy (unless, of course, you want to).

Instead, why not take a selfie of you and your pod wearing this T-shirt, and say a final goodbye to this pivotal year? Instagram will appreciate the last laugh.

4. Share a Mashup of 2020’s Best Music

In a year with little else to enjoy, one thing that continued to get us through was the release of new, amazing art. And lucky for us, there was a lot of it, especially in the music world. So why not end the year by spreading a little joy to your social media channels, and sharing this year’s “United States of Pop” from DJ Earworm.

Spotify Wrapped is our favorite yearly tradition, and 2020’s is coming to us soon. This is our favorite way to review our listening habits from the past year, and refresh our memories about songs we may have forgotten.

6. Review Your Nintendo Switch Stats

Are you one of the many, many people who ordered a Nintendo Switch in the middle of March? You must be, since articles are reporting that, nine months later, they are still sold out everywhere.

7. Set Yourself a Book Challenge on Goodreads

Of course, we also want to make sure to start the new year off on the right foot. This can feel impossible, when there’s so much out of our control, but what about starting with a small goal? Goodreads allows you to track and review what you read, so that every book counts towards your challenge for the new year.

You can set the total to whatever feels reasonable to you. 25? 50? 100? Share yours, and encourage friends to do the same. At least there’s one thing you know will go right in 2021.

8. Host a TeleParty

There are certain Internet platforms we all got way too used to in 2020 (we’re looking at you, Zoom), but there are others that we can’t believe we ever lived without. If you haven’t tried TeleParty (formerly known as Netflix Party), New Year’s Eve may be your chance. Celebrate the stroke of midnight by watching something together, at a distance.

You can choose any movie on Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, or HBO, and it will give you your own chat room beside the screen. Post the link to yours on social media and invite everyone to share jokes, commentary, and most importantly, the experience.

9. Play a Game

If you don’t feel like watching a movie, there are plenty of other ways to connect using social media, and turn December 31st into a virtual party. We are big fans of the many game choices on Jackbox.TV, but you’ve probably also heard of the fun and trendy Among Us, which has taken over our feeds these last few months.

Whatever you choose, take advantage of this way to spend time together, and use social media to ask friends to join.

10. Enjoy the Ball Drop

Though these are ten great ways to celebrate the new year on social media, the truth is, this year nearly everything is on social media. And that’s a great thing. It means that even though we are all scattered around the country, or even the globe, we can still make the most of this moment together.
