9 new designer wedding collections for brides who want to break with tradition
Here are 9 new collections or capsules for 2023 that have a distinct designer point of view, and don’t follow most of the traditional rules of wedding attire. With one exception: interestingly, all of these renegade looks still hew to the traditional white or ivory color scheme. We’ve read that some brides are opting for black gowns – but that’s for another post. All photos are courtesy of the respective designers. Sweet, sassy, or full-on sexy, maybe your dream gown has arrived.
1. For the iconoclast: Lapointe.
LAPOINTE’s debut bridal collection is “designed for the New Bride who is seeking alternatives to the traditional and expected world of bridal.” Iconoclasts will find weightless veils and wispy white feathers throughout the debut collection, along with slip dresses, on-trend satin trousers, scuba pants and blazers. Oh, and a ruffled tulle bustier.

2. For the backyard wedding: Staud.
You can’t put the Staud bride into a neat traditional category. “I know she’s simultaneously comfortable getting married at some far flung cliffside Italian riviera as she is in her backyard—and this collection can dress her for it,” founder and designer Staudinger tells Harper’s BAZAAR. And she certainly stands behind her product. The Janet, a sleeveless maxi dress with a halter neckline in the new bridal collection, is almost identical to the one that Staudinger wore for her own wedding.

3. For a dramatic entrance: Christopher John Rogers.
Christopher John Rogers, one of New York fashion’s brightest emerging talents, has quietly designed custom bridal looks for clients on the side of his ready-to-wear brand for a few seasons. This spring, he’s spreading the wealth with an exclusive capsule on Net-a-Porter that leans into the (earned) drama of a bridal look. For a dress code that usually dictates a white or ivory gown, Rogers found ways to playfully inject flashes of color for the adventurous bride.

4. For the dare-to-be-bare bride: Nensi Dojaka.
LVMH prize-winning designer Nensi Dojaka released her first bridal capsule exclusively on Mytheresa this year. The bold collection is comprised of 24 wedding pieces for brides and bridesmaids.
Vogue applauds the new line as “a fresh approach to wedding codes. The new collection features figure-hugging wedding dresses complete with sensual straps and layers of sheer fabric, as well as sequined evening gowns, airy mini-dresses, edgy corset-and-trouser ensembles and sleek tailoring. The key ingredient? The designer’s signature lingerie details.”

5. For the courthouse wedding: Loeffler Randall.
For 2023, Loeffler Randall has expanded its initial wedding collection to include even more options, including charming diaphanous dresses, some crafted in lace. Brides have turned to the brands shoes for years as perfect for the big walk down the aisle. Now there are even more ways to wear the brand head to toe. “For ready-to-wear, we think less about the actual wedding and more about the events surrounding the wedding—like a shower or a rehearsal or honeymoon trip,” Randall noted in a recent interview. “Our muse is more of a city hall wedding type, I think.”

6. For the beach wedding: Pipatchara.
Harper’s BAZAAR reports that as of 2023, Pipatchara, the women-owned and led brand known for its inventive macramé handbags, now designs handmade, eco-conscious bridal couture in a new made-to-order offering. “The white gowns and separates pay homage to the main line with woven motifs and upcycled embellishments. With a shiny tactile effect like a trove of rare seashells, these pieces are so suited to a beachfront wedding.” Plan ahead, as each piece is custom and made-to-order. Prices vary depending on design; the gown pictured below is $6,000 or so.
7. For the sensual romantic: Mirror Palais.
New York-based dressmaker Mirror Palais has debuted a bridal collection, unveiled in March 2023. Harper’s BAZAAR notes that the new collection “builds on [the brand’s] reputation for sensually clinging dresses and luxurious fabrics.” While there are lovely gowns at lower price points, this top-of-the-line “Angel of the Morning” gown caught our eye. It’s made-to-order, and orders take approximately 4 months right now.

8. For the bohemian bride: ba&sh.
Parisian label ba&sh’s first bridal capsule launched this year, and boho brides are already raving about it. The vibe is relaxed and dreamy, and the potential for further use after the ceremony is high. As Harper’s BAZAAR notes: “Pay close attention to the matching sets with lace detailing: They’re the rare bridal gem you can wear beyond the wedding festivities.”

9. For the urban sophisticate: Cushnie x BHLDN.
Fashion designer Carly Cushnie has teamed up with BHLDN to create a bridal capsule for 2023. Cushnie had to shutter her eponymous brand in the wake of COVID-19, and brides missed her sleek wedding and bridesmaids dresses. The new 10-piece capsule collection “highlights Cushnie’s signature tailoring and modern design aesthetics, and includes everything from floor-length gowns to mini blazer dresses.”
