What do Selma Hayek, Kirsten Dunst, Hailey Bieber, Serena Williams, Blake Lively and Kourtney Kardashian all have in common? Besides impossibly good genes, they all rock an oval sparkler on their ring fingers. The oval-shaped diamond is the newest reigning shape in engagement rings. First created by Lazare Kaplan in the early 1960s, it is similar to the round brilliant, but the oval diamond has a more elongated shape that makes it look bigger than its actual size. Oval diamonds set in engagement rings also make the finger of the wearer look slender and longer. Wait…so why don’t we all have an oval diamond ring?

If you’re shopping for an oval engagement ring (or helping to steer your partner in the right direction), here are a few things to know. A stone with a length-to-width ratio of of 1.35 to 1.50 is considered the classic oval cut. This cut is known to have a bowtie effect. It’s actually quite common and a little contrast of bright whites and dark can be dynamic looking. However if the diamond is poorly cut, it can produce an area across the diamond that looks like two pronounced triangles. Your best bet is to shop around and develop an eye for it. We can think of many less enjoyable tasks!
To get you started, here are some stunning oval diamond sparklers. And who says you have to wait for a proposal to enjoy one?
