If you ask an experienced botanist what spring smells like, they might very well say that it smells like the lilac collection at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). And that’s where they’d suggest you go in New York if you want a full immersion in their particular brand of spring renewal, along with a host of other spring flowers. These fragrant, beautiful blooms are at their peak right now, and visiting feels like something out of a magical spring dream. Here are some of our favorite photos of the lilacs in bloom in NY at the Botanical Garden. We just wish we could share their heady fragrance with you, as well. For that, you’ll just have to go and experience them for yourselves.
the Lilacs are in full Bloom at the New York Botanical Garden
There’s an argument to be made that daffodils are the iconic symbol of spring. Others might argue for tulips (especially if they’re from the Netherlands).
But for our money, the lilac is the very embodiment of the spring: the pretty pastel colors, the heart-shaped leaves – and most of all, their heady fragrance.

Even a single lilac can add a burst of spring scent to a room – imagine the sensation of being surrounded by them, and the intoxicating fragrance that perfumes the air.

Well, imagine no more. You can experience an immersion in all things lilac from April to mid-May at the NY Botanical Garden. While the blooms peak in mid-April, we visited in early May and it was still a marvelous display.

The NYBG’s Burn Family Lilac Collection showcases “antique specimens as well as new lilacs; tall tree lilacs and dwarf lilacs; and flowers that smell sweet and others that are spicy.” New Yorkers began making the pilgrimage out of the city to see and sniff the lilacs at the NY Botanical Garden since 1896.
Have a look, and you’ll see why its still well worth the trip.

It may just be us, but we thought the lavender and violet lilacs had the sweetest and most haunting fragrance.
