We can’t believe it’s already time for spring break. Well, we sort of can – it’s been a long, slow winter. No matter where you are, we’re sure you’re looking forward to some rest, some sun, and especially some rest and relaxation. And nothing goes as well with rest and relaxation as the company of a good book.

In fact, a good book can make even a weekend at home feel like spring break – that’s the magic and escapism of reading. So, no matter how you’re spending these first few weeks of spring, we want to supply you with some shiny new book recommendations. Throw one in the carry-on bag for your upcoming trip, or in the tote bag for your afternoon at the park.
These ten new reads all came out in early 2022 (or will be out by the end of next month) and they’ve got the works: murders, heists, sisters, mother-daughter relationships and more – everything you need to sweep you away this season.

1. The Perfect Escape by Leah Konen
If this spring break includes a girls’ weekend, perhaps you want to read a book about… a girls’ weekend? Sam, Margaret, and Diana are best friends, excited for the weekend getaway they’ve planned to celebrate their divorces. But when their car breaks down and strands them in the middle of nowhere, some long-held resentments begin to come to light – and then Diana disappears. As her friends search for her, they have to wonder: how well did any of them really know each other in the first place? This book seems tailor-made for spring break – that is, if you can handle the suspense.

2. Cherish Farrah by Bethany C. Morrow
Another thriller, because for many of us, spring break reads need to keep our hearts pumping – and the pages turning. Farrah is one of only two Black girls in her country club community – the other is her best friend Cherish, who was adopted by white parents. When Farrah finds herself getting closer and closer to Cherish’s family, her parents warn her to stay away – strange things are happening in Cherish’s house. Will she listen to them before it’s too late? Described as social horror, this is one of those books you won’t be able to stop reading – which makes it the perfect pick for spring break.

3. Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li
We’re calling it now – this is going to be one of the best new releases of the spring. And we can’t wait to dive in. Will Chen is an art history major at Harvard, whose life is forever changed when a mysterious benefactor presents him with a mission: steal back five historic Chinese sculptures that were looted from Beijing, and he will receive fifty million dollars. Can he do it? With the help of an incredible team, his chances look good – but the stakes include something more complicated than money. If Will and his team fail, it will be another reminder of all that colonialism has stolen. There’s nothing quite as perfect as a book that is as thoughtful and serious as it is fun and readable, and Portrait of a Thief sounds like it has it all.

4. The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart
In the distant-but-maybe-not-distant-enough-future, the world has cracked the key to time travel, and – perhaps unsurprisingly – it’s a total tourist trap. But it might be more dangerous than anyone realizes. The novel is told from the perspective of January, head of security at the Paradox Hotel – a place where many time travelers come to stay before their temporal journeys. But January has a secret: all of her own time traveling has started to mess with her head – as has the recent death of her girlfriend, Mena. When someone attempts to murder the attendees of a hotel conference, can January find the culprit before it’s too late – and before her sense of reality is completely gone?

5. The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont

This book peels back the imagined layers of what is perhaps Agatha Christie’s most fascinating mystery of all – the mystery of her real marriage, and what it might have to do with those famous eleven days.

6. I’ll Be You by Janelle Brown
Books about imaginary movie stars are the latest trend, and we have to say – we can’t get enough of them. Here’s another that we’re excited to get our hands on. Sam and Elli are inseparable as children, and it’s not just that they’re identical twins: they’re also child actresses, who often end up playing the same role. But as adults, their paths have diverged – Elli has settled into a quiet, stable life, and Sam has used drugs and alcohol to cope with her Hollywood past. So when Sam finds out that Elli has disappeared, she’s shocked. She thought her sister had everything under control. She will have to figure out the truth, if she wants to bring her sister home.

7. The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb
Ray has always dreamed of becoming a famous violinist, and against all odds, he is about to make those dreams come true. With his great-great-grandfather’s violin in tow, he is about to perform in a pivotal Tchaikovsky competition, and then he discovers the violin has been stolen – and a ransom note left in its place. Can he solve the mystery before it’s too late?

8. Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover
If you’re interested in a spring break book that is readable but still packs an emotional punch, we present to you Reminders of Him, one of the buzziest books of the year.
