And of course, how could we forget visual art? As well as the major art fairs happening this summer, there’s also a slew of exciting exhibits making their way to museums around the globe. Some of these are opening this summer, while others are about to close, so make sure to check the details – you won’t want to miss a thing.

1. Gaudí
Musée d’Orsay: Until July 17th, 2022.
In this brand-new “immersive museographic experience,” Musée d’Orsay puts forward the first French showcase of the iconic architect’s work in more than 50 years. The exhibition will attempt to illuminate the artist’s process, connecting the dots between his techniques, his collaborators, and the Art Noveau moment in Spain. With drawings of the artist, films, photographs, period documents, models, and pieces of furniture that have never before been shown in France. Vviewers will begin to see the ways in which the artist forever changed the city of Barcelona.

2. Afro-Atlantic Histories
The National Gallery of Art: April 10th – July 17th, 2022.
200 artists. Six centuries. More than 130 powerful works of art – including sculpture, paintings, photographs, and other mediums – come together to tell the complex stories of African Diaspora. Featuring voices from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean. This essential exhibit unites artists, scholars, and curators in vital conversation about the cultural formations and experiences of Black and African people across hundreds of years.
3. Donatello: The Renaissance
Strozzi Palace: March 19th – July 31st, 2022.
In this “once-in-a-lifetime exhibition,” the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence reconstructs the career of the Italian master. With a hundred masterpieces loaned from museums around the world, juxtaposed against the work of his contemporaries – including Brunelleschi, Raphael, and Michelangelo – this special exhibit puts Donatello and his sculptures on display as never before.
4. Igshaan Adams: Desire Lines
The Art Institute of Chicago: April 22nd – August 1st, 2022.
In his first major solo show in the United States, the artist will display eight years of his miraculous tapestries and textiles. Composed of more than twenty different projects – including a brand-new large-scale commission created especially for this showcase – the exhibition hinges on the central concept of “desire lines.” “Desire lines” refer to the paths pedestrians pave through their societies that exist outside the pre-determined boundaries. Pairing this metaphor with both the physical and socio-political foundations of his home in Bonteheuwel, South Africa, Adams brings beautiful attention to an often-overlooked detail.

5. Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy
Legion of Honor: April 16th – September 5th, 2022.
The new San Francisco exhibit celebrates the extraordinary work of China’s first couturier, Guo Pei. With more than eighty pieces from the last two decades, the exhibit will display not only the collections worn on Beijing and Paris runways, but also the trajectory of Pei’s career. As well as showcasing her exquisite craftmanship and innovation, the exhibit highlights the fantasy world she creates in every piece, influenced by China’s history, European architecture, and the natural world.
6. Matisse: The Red Studio
Museum of Modern Art: Until September 10th, 2022.
In this new, somewhat meta exhibit, Matisse’s The Red Studio (1911) – a piece depicting the artist’s Paris workspace – is reunited with many of the artworks featured within the image. This is the first time the pieces have been together since The Red Studio’s creation, and with the help of supplemental letters, photographs, and historical documents, the exhibit will trace the story of the painting’s complicated history – beginning with its rejection by its commissioner, and ending with how it came to be in MoMA’s care.
7. Dakota Modern: The Art of Oscar Howe
National Museum of the American Indian: March 11th – September 11th, 2022.
He was one of the most prominent Native American painters of the twentieth century. Howe dedicated his illustrious career to the portrayal and preservation of Yanktonai Dakota culture. With his work, he demonstrated to the world that art does not have to choose between being modern and being thoroughly embedded in culture and tradition. And now a new generation will get to appreciate his art.

8. Feminine Power: The Divine to the Demonic
The British Museum: May 19th – September 25th, 2022.
Goddesses, witches, demons, spirits, and saints, oh my. With the first exhibit of its kind, the British Museum puts a spotlight on the scope and influence of feminine power. Using a collection of sacred objects, sculptures, and other art, both contemporary and ancient, from across six continents. The exhibit will help viewers begin to understand the way female power and female deities have shaped the world as we know it today.
9. Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech
The Brooklyn Museum: July 1st 2022 – January 29th, 2023.
Beginning in early July, you will be able to visit the Brooklyn Museum’s retrospective honoring late visionary designer Virgil Abloh. This is the first exhibit dedicated to the artist’s work. It will include two decades of his creations, including collaborations – with Takashi Murakami, Kanye West, and Rem Koolhaas – pieces from his label Off-White, and items from Louis Vuitton. He served as the first Black artistic director of menswear. Many of the included items have never before been seen by the public. As well as the indoor exhibit, there will also be a “social sculpture,” intended as a gathering space for performances by Black artists.
10. The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art
Los Angeles County Museum of Art: September 11th 2022 – February 19th, 2023.
And to cap off the summer, a sprawling new exhibit that is set to be the first of its kind in the West. Organized chronologically, this Los Angeles showcase compiles works created between 1897 and 1965 in Korea. With more than 130 pieces on display – including oils, ink, photography, and sculpture – the exhibit attempts to capture the influence of foreign-introduced new media.
