to avoid summer heat, what are the best locations for a luxury vacation?

We love summer, but the heat and humidity can sometimes feel a little… unbearable. for those who are like us, we have another idea for the perfect luxury summer vacation: why not leave the heat behind?

After all, there are plenty of places in the world where it’s not a thousand degrees. Places that are currently experiencing winter, and places where it simply never reaches these super-high degrees. Let’s plan a trip to one of them, and remind ourselves that this is why we should all try to lead more sustainable lives –  so that summers never get any hotter than this.

Here are ten cool countries to put on your summer bucket list.

10 countries and locations for a luxury vacation with cool temperatures this summer

1. iceland

The cold weather is right there in the name. But in all seriousness, Iceland is the perfect summer destination. In fact, July is the most popular time to visit the country, thanks to its mild temperatures – usually around 55 degrees Fahrenheit – and its legendary midnight sun. You can immerse yourself in the natural world – hiking through waterfalls, touring the glaciers, and maybe even hopping aboard a whale-watching tour – or spend your time in Reykjavik, the country’s capital. With twenty hours of daylight, you can imagine the kind of “night” life that you’ll find here, as well as the city’s best summer festivals.  Make sure to say hello to the puffins while you’re in town.

2. greenland

While we’re on the subject of Iceland, you may also want to consider Greenland. Here temperatures are likely to be in the 40’s and 50’s, giving you an opportunity to break out all your favorite sweaters – we’re sure you’ve missed them. Though not as popular a destination as Iceland, we think that Greenland is underrated – there’s lots to do and see. Especially if you’re a hiker, Greenland is the perfect place to feast your eyes upon some unforgettable scenery. You can lose yourself in the glaciers and the mountains, and find a little peace and quiet.

3. norway

If you’re really craving that midnight sun, you might also consider visiting Norway. July is the country’s busiest month, and you can expect temperatures that are a little warmer here – maybe in the 60’s, or even 70’s. Still, anything beats that sticky 90-degree weather, right?  As well as romping around the lovely city of Oslo, you’ll definitely want to take some time to enjoy the country’s natural beauty – especially the fjords (inlets of water between two cliffs, for those not in the know).  Save some energy to hike out to Trolltunga – or troll’s tongue – which is a must-see.

4. finland

One last stop for the midnight sun. Finland is another perfect summer destination, with the season’s temperate climate making it a hot (or not-so-hot) travel spot for those looking to escape the heat. And there’s so much to do in Finland, you’ll find yourself wanting to soak up every hour of sunlight for a range of activities – everything from boating to swimming to sipping on some of the coffee that the country is known for. You’ll definitely want to spend time in Helsinki, but be sure to save some days for some of the country’s other wonderful cities.

5. argentina

Of course, if you’re really craving the cold, you can also go find yourself some winter.  July is one of the most popular winter months to visit the country of Argentina, and you can choose your own adventure. Perhaps you’re interested in a city trip, spending most of your time in the fabulous capital, Buenos Aires? Or maybe you’d rather cozy up at one of Patagonia’s many luxurious ski resorts. Or perhaps you’d like to take advantage of the ample opportunities for whale watching and outdoor adventure – and of the fact that July is a slower travel month, meaning fewer fellow tourists around. No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find it here.

6. chile

July is a very popular time to visit Chile –especially for skiers. You’ll find mild winter temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s, and plenty to do and see. If you’re not planning to ski, you may want to head to Santiago, or else check out the country’s incredible wine valleys. You could also consider a voyage to Easter Island – one of the world’s most remote destinations, and another spectacular place to escape the summer heat.

7. peru

July is one of the absolute best times to visit Peru. Dry and mild, the weather sets the perfect stage for all the outdoor-adventuring of your dreams. You can plan a journey to Machu Picchu, and likely connect with many fellow hikers along the way. Spend some time in the cities of Cusco and Lima, and you’ll have yourself the perfect vacation.

8. new zealand

If you want to get as far away from the summer heat as possible, maybe it’s time for a trip to the other side of the world? New Zealand is the perfect July vacation, with temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s. You could plan to ski, or head to Auckland or Queenstown to explore a new city without sweating through your clothes. Sounds like a dream to us.

9. australia

And while you’re (sort of) in the neighborhood, Australia may also be calling. Despite it being mid-winter, the temperatures tend to stay mild, making this high time to explore the country’s many natural splendors. Take a peek at the Great Barrier Reef, hold a baby koala, and make sure to save some time for fan-favorite metropolises, Sydney and Melbourne. You’ll be so glad that the summer heat gave you an excuse.

10. cape town

July could also be a great time to visit Cape Town! Since this is the height of winter here, you’ll find fewer fellow tourists than usual – and you’ll still experience temperatures in the 60’s and low 70’s. You can hike, enjoy endless natural wonders, and also take advantage of whale watching season. As you may have noticed, July is one of the best months to see some whales, and Cape Town is yet another great place to do so. You’re in for a treat.
