Now trending for summer 2022: tomato soup red designer fashions of all kinds. Is this part of the overall trend toward nostalgia and reaching back for the comforts of childhood? Like the “Dirty Shirley” trend we covered previously? Maybe. After all, as InStyle notes, the hot hue “kind of looks like the brothy sauce in between SpaghettiOs, a delightful, nostalgic treat.” Whatever the cause, if you’re intrigued, our correspondent Meredith Lepore has curated a list of tips on how to wear tomato red, one of the top designer fashion trends of summer 2022, including the best dress, shorts, hat and more to channel your inner Elmo.
why is tomato red such a big designer fashion trend this summer 2022?
Color is back. After two plus years of sweat pants Alo/SKIMS-inspired neutrals being all the rage people are embracing color once again. We are going out to parties, weddings and even work and it is time to start dressing up again.

One of the big colors for spring 2022 is the very bold tomato red. Celebrities including Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Zendaya and Bella Hadid have all embraced the trend.
Red is always a powerful statement and it is easy to make a part of your daytime look or a strikingly elegant evening look. And though the trend is big now it can be easily carried over to the winter.

The psychology behind the color red is a driving force for wearing it. The color symbolizes the “revolutionary love and sacrifice” women have made throughout history.
And it may just give you a leg up at work. Constance Hart, a color therapy expert from Conscious Colors, told Vogue, “If you aren’t feeling centered or secure, black can feel like a security blanket. For that reason, we see a lot of black in cities. In my work, I try to help people move away from black because it can have a depressive quality to it. Color has an effect on our psyche, it’s always affecting us whether we are aware of it or not.”
In 2017, a study published in the Journal of Social Psychology found that because red is an intrinsically striking color, it has a way of accenting what and who most would likely would find it attractive. So you know people will be checking out!
Plus it gives the wearer a bit of a mojo confidence. The researchers in the study found that those who wore an outfit of mostly red expressed a heightened sense of self-assurance. “We found that people can feel more attractive when putting on red clothes,” the researchers reported. “[T]he results showed that the self-perception red effect was mediated by the individuals’ self-perceived sexual receptivity and self-perceived status.”
If you are a little color shy, try starting with a pop of color. Maybe a hat or purse then work your way up to a fabulous dress or full monochromatic look. Here are some of the best tomato red pieces for you to get your confidence on this spring.
