The cascading waterfall effect of the sand-colored leather makes a dramatic design statement, and the four sections can be grouped together or separately in numerous configurations. As one observer notes, you can create “little mountain ranges” to your liking.

3. The Pierre Paulin Alpha Sofa.

French furniture and interior designer Pierre Paulin is a name to know if you want understand the current mania for chic seating. He began his career in the 1950’s, and became famous when he redesigned the furnishings at the Elysée Palace for President Pompidou in 1971.

Architectural Digest describes his aesthetic as a “unique blend of Japanese and Scandinavian simplicity with American midcentury functionality.”

Paulin’s work was included in an influential MoMA exhibit, with The New York Times calling him “the new Eames.” His work is in the museum’s permanent collection, and also in those of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Musée des Arts Decoratifs and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

6. sofa 280 by Pierre Augustin Rose.

Pierre Augustin Rose is an association of styles belonging to three designers: Pierre Bénard, Augustin Deleuze and Nina Rose.

The 280 sofa is an oversized version of the 190 (both are named after their width in centimeters). The overstretched lines that are slightly rounded are an ode to Scandinavian design.
