8 best luxury ski resorts for a summer skiing vacation this year
1. mount hood, oregon
Located about an hour and a half from Portland, the Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood boasts one of the longest ski seasons in North America, with lifts operating year-round.
The resort is popular for professional racers and freestyle skiers and riders (it’s the summer home for the U.S. Ski, Free Skiing and Snowboarding teams), but there is always open terrain maintained for the general public. After hitting the slopes, unwind at the resort’s outdoor hot tub and pool overlooking the range. Fun and slightly scary fact: The Shining was filmed here.

2. whistler blackcomb, canada
One of the largest ski resorts in North America, Whistler Blackcomb opens for summer skiing shortly after the regular ski season ends. From mid-June to mid-July, two T-bars provide skiing on Blackcomb’s Horstman Glacier in a public terrain park as well as in private areas reserved for summer camps.
Ski and Snowboard ability level must be advanced to expert, no exceptions. The Four Seasons Resort is one of the best hotel options in town.
3. tignes, france
Open from late June to early August, the Grande Motte Glacier in Tignes, France offers 20 km of varied terrain – blue, red and black runs and even some cross country skiing – accessed by chairlifts and drags.
The glacier closes at 1 pm, which is a perfect time to head back to the Hotel Village Montana and enjoy some time lakeside or the Nordic swimming pool and spa with an oriental hammam, hot tub and saunas.
4. les 2 alpes, france
Situated on the Mont de Lans Glacier in France, Les 2 Alpes is touted as one of the largest summer ski areas in Europe. From late May to the end of August the area is home to high-quality snow at an elevation of 11,800 feet with freestyle terrain for skiers and riders of all abilities.
In terms of where to stay, Chalet Mounier has been charming guests since 1879. It’s had a few upgrades since then of course, including a hammam spa and a Michelin starred restaurant.

5. zermatt, switzerland
Open year-round, Zermatt has a whopping 21 km of summer skiing on Theodul Glacier. In addition to being the highest and largest summer skiing operation in Europe, the freestyle Snowpark Zermatt provides one of the best views of the iconic Matterhorn.
Visitors can also enjoy a variety of summer ski school options and share the slopes with international ski teams in training. Be sure to hit the trails early because Zermatt summer skiing is only available until noon. Afterwards, retreat to a stay at Mont Cervin Palace, which features an extensive wellness center. It boasts an indoor pool as well as a heated outdoor pool, where you can relax with views of the Matterhorn.
6. saas fee, switzerland
Summer skiing in Switzerland is not limited to just one option. The Allalin Glacier in Saas Fee offers summer and fall skiing from mid-July to late October and boasts more than a dozen miles of pistes and terrain parks. The 20 km ski area is well suited to intermediates and is, like many of the other summer skis spots, popular with freestylers and race teams.
When the ski day ends (between 12-3pm depending on summer or fall) visitors can eat lunch in the world’s highest revolving restaurant, Revolving Restaurant Allalin, located at 11,480 feet above sea level before heading back to stay at the Walliserhof Grand Hotel & Spa.
7. las leñas, argentina
Ready to head south for winter? Las Leñas is one of the highest ski resorts in Argentina and boasts 52 km of slopes suited to skiers and riders of all levels. Advanced and expert skiers come for the deep off-piste powder, but beginners and families can enjoy some fun too with an uninterrupted 1,000 meter descent along a mild slope plus a formidable ski school.
For accommodations, try the Hotel Piscis & Spa. Located in the heart of the resort it has an exceptional panoramic view.

8. coronet peak, new zealand
Opening in mid June for its 75th season, Coronet Peak is just 20 minutes away from Queenstown, New Zealand and the varied terrain offers something for everyone.
Beginners and intermediates have wide green and blue runs while more advanced skiers can hit the terrain park or test their stamina on the longest run, the “M-1”, stretching 2.4 km. Stay at the nearby Stoneridge Estate overlooking the mountains.
