What can we learn about women’s style from this year’s Hollywood awards shows? Specifically, the women’s fashion at the Oscars? We’ve curated a list of the best designer fashion and celebrity styles and the best dressed women from the 2023 Oscars red carpet.
The best-dressed women from the 2023 Oscars red carpet
The red carpet at this year’s 95th Academy Awards was inexplicably switched to a champagne-colored runner, but no matter — the stars must go on. The time-honored fashion spectacle did not disappoint with looks that we love (as well as those we love to hate). The energy this year was pure maximalism. Aside from the obligatory rhinestone and crystal encrusted dresses (Jamie Lee Curtis, Kate Hudson, Eva Longoria, Jessica Chastain), there was a bevy of pouffy, flowing capes (Florence Pugh, Allison Williams, Ashley Graham, Fan Bing Bing) and bold, vivid colors (Melissa McCarthy in red, Angela Bassett in purple, Salma Hayek in orange, Stephanie Hsu in hot pink). But, the reigning color of the night was white. Michelle Yeoh’s swan-like Dior, Emily Blunt’s sleek Valentino, Sofia Carson’s Giambattista Valli princess-worthy gown and more, all embraced the bridal standard.
It’s a tough gig but someone has to sort through the visual cacophony. In this highly subjective list, we’re featuring our picks for the Oscar’s best-dressed women.
The best-dressed women from the 2023 Oscars red carpet
1. Michelle Yeoh
The Everything Everywhere All at Once star has been lighting up the award shows with her stunning choices. We loved seeing her fresh and serene as a bohemian bride in this layered silk organza and feathered Dior gown that took over 600 hours to complete.
2. Cate Blanchett
Continuing her focus on sustainable fashion this awards season, the Tár actress wore a gorgeously draped liquid metallic blue top from the Louis Vuitton archives paired with a sleek fishtail skirt. It’s giving 80s vibes but in Cate’s signature sophisticated and regal way.
3. Cara Delevigne
It isn’t the Oscars without a nod to old-school Hollywood glamour. We think model Cara Delevigne pulled it off best this year in this one-shouldered Elie Saab gown.
4. Halle Bailey
Our favorite ingenue award goes to this 22-year old actress and singer in Disney’s upcoming live action The Little Mermaid. Her Dolce & Gabbana gown is appropriately frothy and fit for a fairytale princess.
5. Mindy Kaling
Wearing a sultry and sculptural cut-out Vera Wang, the multi-hyphenate talent continues her glow-up before our eyes.
6. Michelle Williams
The Fabelmans Best Actress nominee knows what works for her. No one does ethereal pixie better. This Chanel gown features a sheer, shimmering cape overlay to enhance the fairy-like effect.
7. Angela Bassett
Nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the actress brought the regal energy to the red (er, I mean, champagne) carpet as well in a dramatic purple Moschino gown.
8. Phoebe Waller Bridge
We didn’t know the Fleabag writer and actress was making an appearance at the Oscars as the partner of playwright Martin McDonagh! Imagine all their witty dialogue. But we digress. Wearing a sexy, corseted black gown from Dolce & Gabbana, she pulls off that enviable and timeless French girl chic.
9. Monica Barbaro
The Top Gun: Maverick actress looked stunning in this unexpected choice from Elie Saab. Who knew that two-tone sky blue and eggplant purple could look so elegant?
10. Malala Yousafzai
The Pakistani activist and executive producer on the short film Stranger at the Gate made an unforgettable debut at the Oscars in a hooded silver sequined gown by Ralph Lauren. We think she stole the show!
